New communications tower erected in LeRoy

A new 165 ft. communications tower was erected in the Town of LeRoy Wednesday.

It is located behind the Town of LeRoy Highway Department on Asbury road.

The tower will provide additional coverage to the Town and Village of LeRoy and also open possibilities for Livingston County to participate in the Harris P25 Digital radio system in the future.

This is the 7th tower constructed in Genesee County.

The system went live in February of 2014 with just three towers.

The construction of new towers is part of a 3 million dollar grant program through the State of NY.

Monies are collected from wireless surcharge revenues to fund the grants.

According to Steven Sharpe, Director of Emergency Communications, the tower will be operational by summer.

Between now and then, a fully trunked system will be added to the tower and paging will also be included for fire and EMS personnel. There will also be microwave updates.

In 2017, towers will also be erected to allow Genesee County to connect with Monroe/Ontario and Orleans Counties.
