GENESEE COUNTY/Bradford man dies in Bethany accident


The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a three vehicle accident that occurred on Rt. 63, near Fargo road, in the Town of Bethany late Friday morning.

At 11:19a.m., dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call of a serious injury accident with possible entrapment.

A 2011 Toyota sedan, driven by Gerald D. Makin, 67, of Bradford, NY, was northbound on Rt. 63 when for an unknown reason, he traveled over the center of the roadway striking a 2013 Ford F-150 pick up that was headed southbound on Rt. 63. That vehicle was being driven by Robert E. Moore Jr., 50, of Elba. A third vehicle, a 2007 Ford pick up truck, was parked on the west shoulder of Rt. 63 and was struck by Moore’s vehicle in the initial collision. The parked vehicle was unoccupied.

Makin was pronounced dead at the scene by Genesee County Coroner Tom Douglas. Makin’s passenger, Anna Ayers, 69, was transported by Mercy EMS to Strong Hospital with minor injuries.

Moore and his passenger, Christine Moore, 49, were both transported by Mercy EMS to UMMC with minor injuries.

At this time the investigation is continuing as to the the reason Makin failed to maintain his lane.

The accident is being investigated by Deputy Cory Mower. Assisting at the scene was Undersheriff Greg Walker, Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble, Investigator Chris Parker and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Crash Management Team members Sgt. Jason Saile and Sgt. Eric Seppala. Also on scene were members of the Town of Bethany and Stafford Fire Departments along with Mercy EMS and the NYS Police.
