BATAVIA/Customers attempt to stop larceny in progress at parking lot of home improvement store

Several customers at a home improvement store parking lot on Veterans Memorial Drive attempted to stop a larceny in progress.

The incident occurred about 10:00a.m. Wednesday.

Suspects exited the store with a cart full of power tools.

A customer was injured when he attempted to stop a suspect from putting the stolen tools in the trunk of their rental car. The customer suffered a hand injury after his hand was closed in the trunk, but he was not struck by the car.

A second customer then attempted to stop the vehicle, a red four door Nissan, from backing out of the parking spot by blocking the car with his vehicle. The suspect vehicle then struck that customer’s vehicle and suffered rear damage to the trunk.

A third customer attempted to block the vehicle with his car as the suspect vehicle left the parking lot. That customer’s vehicle was also damaged.

The red 4 door Nissan was able to get away on the NYS Thruway.

After a few minutes, State Police located the suspect vehicle on a side road behind the Scottsville Service area of the thruway. It had crashed and there was air bag deployment.

After the vehicle was located, a woman who reportedly rented the vehicle from a rental company in Monroe County called the rental location in Monroe County asking to put insurance coverage on the vehicle.

One person was taken into custody for questioning.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and looking for suspects.

The driver was described as a black male with a blue shirt and blue shorts.
