GENESEE COUNTY/Down Syndrome Parent Support group continuing the dance

A Summer Dance celebration for those with disabilities rocked the floor at the ARC Genesee/Orleans Community Center on Woodrow road in Batavia on Thursday night.

This is the second dance of the year held by the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County which encompasses the GLOW region.

The program is modeled after one that two women with the Byron Ladies Auxiliary started a number of years ago. Holding dances for those with disabilities on a monthly basis September through May.

This is the second dance that has been held for the year and it is open to all persons with a disability.

“Wish we could do it every month, but we are volunteers and there are contraints, so our plan is to do this in February, around Valentines Day, and once in the Summer,” says Dawn Fisher, President of the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County.

Next year, the Summer Dance will be moved to an earlier time to include those who are attending summer school at the NYS School For the Blind.

Thursday night, Kay Cook, the founder of the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group, was in attendance and says she is pleased to see the program she helped create continue.

“I think it is wonderful, I am very pleased that it does continue,” say Cook.

“It was a work of love in the beginning and continued to be for a long time, then I just got burned out.”

Cook, now living in Tennessee, was here visiting her 30 year old daughter Missy and her boyfriend Billy who live in the area. Cook started the group in 1989 when Missy was 2 years old. She retired in 2009.

The group’s only fundraiser of the year is coming up soon.
