PERRY POLICE REPORT/Perry man charged in friendly fraud incident

A Perry man is charged with two counts of petit larceny after police investigated an alleged charge back scam, also known as friendly fraud, from the Perry Market Place on September 30, 2017.

It is alleged that on two separate occasions, Shane Sillen, 34, had purchased goods at the Perry Market Place using his own credit card. The first incident occurred on August 24th when Sillen purchased $14.51 of merchandise.

Sillen did the same on September 5th purchasing $84.49 worth of merchandise.

Shortly after both purchases, Sillen contacted his credit card company to dispute the purchases stating he returned the items to the Perry Market Place which was false. This caused a stop payment to the store and his card being credited for the amount spent each time even though the merchandise was never returned.

Charge back fraud, also known as friendly fraud, occurs when a consumer makes purchase with their own credit card, and then disputes the purchase requesting a charge back from the credit card company after receiving the purchased goods or services alleging they either returned the items, or never got them.
Sillen was issued appearence tickets and is scheduled to appear in Perry Village Court at a later date to answer to the charges.
