An Elba firefighter was awakened by smoke alarms, smoke and flames Thursday afternoon at his Lewiston road home.
The volunteer firefighter called in the fire and then evacuated the one story home.
Flames were reportedly shooting out of the master bedroom windows when firefighters arrived. Heavy smoke engulfed the rear section of the the house.
Firefighters were able to locate the fireman’s pet cat JuJu who was given oxygen after being found.
Fire companies from Elba, East Pembroke, Town of Batavia, and Alabama assisted the Oakfield Fire Department.
According to Elba Fire Chief Mike Heale, the firefighter was sleeping in the living room at the time of the fire and the fire is believed to have started in the master bedroom.
