The City of Batavia Fire Department held a swift water training class on the Tonawanda Creek Tuesday morning.
According to instructor Capt. Robert Fix, five firefighters are going through training to be certified.
The training is possible due to a $200,000 grant the City of Batavia received two years ago.
Last year, the creek was too shallow to do training. This spring with the heavy rains the creek is at a perfect level.
Fix says that 15-17 swift water technicians will allow the department to have 4 crew members each shift with experience.
“Now we are training to get right in the water, where as before we were only able to stay onshore,” says Fix
