The Notre Dame boys basketball team came away with a big win in their second game of the season, defeating the Elba Lancers 74-72 in overtime. The Irish are now 2-0 on the season.
Notre Dame held a 31-30 lead at the half, but Elba had a good third quarter and outscored the Irish taking the lead into the 4th quarter where they started to run into foul trouble.
Notre Dame clawed their way back into the game in the 4th, the Irish were down by two points with 15 seconds left in the game when Sophomore Gabe Macdonald was fouled and then injured at the buzzer.
Junior Zackary Cocking then came into the game to take Macdonald’s two free throws. Cocking made the first one to tie the game at 64-64, but missed the second to send the game into overtime.
With 1:14 left in overtime with the score tied at 71-71, Sophomore Keith Szczepanski scored two to make it 73-71. Elba was only able to score one more at the free throw line and the Irish held on to win 74-72.
Nico Zambito scored 26 points for the Irish and Spencer Misiti had 14 and Szczepanski finished with 13 points.
Elba’s Colton Dillion had 23 points and Collin O’Halloran had 15 points in the loss.
Elba is 2-1 on the season.
