GENESEE COUNTY/Two hair salons collecting coats for those in need

Jody Lutey, owner of Salon VIP in Batavia, and Gillian Brinkworth, owner of Gillian Marie Salon in Alexander, have known each other for a long time.

Last night about midnight, the two decided to collect coats for those in need after a Facebook conversation about the recent cold snap.

“I had coats this morning just delivered at my door, not sure who, but pretty amazing to wake up to that,” says Brinkworth.

Lutey came up with the idea after seeing kids walking home from school in front of her West Main street shop.

“I’ve seen kids with spring jackets and their faces are beat red and no hats,” says Lutey.

“I had a school teacher reach out to me this morning that she has a student walking from school to a hotel out on West Main street road in frostbite situations.”

Brinkworth says Lutey was her dance teacher, was there for hockey growing up and now hair.

“We try to do a lot of things to help the community so this is just one more thing,” says Brinkworth.

Lutey says the pair plan to go all winter with collecting coats, blankets and food. They will make drop off’s to the Salvation Army on a daily basis.

In Batavia, Salon VIP is located at 108 West Main Street, near Thomas avenue, and they can take donations until 6:00pm. or call 585-356-3682.

In Alexander, Gillian Marie Salon will take donations until 9:00p.m.
Or call at 585-356-7897.

“We just want to spread the warmth and love,” says Brinkworth.

Lutey says the pair have suffered some heartbreaks this year.

“We just want to give back,” says Lutey.
