Press release
Sheriff Gregory Rudolph would like to alert the community of a complaint that was received by the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office on February 13, 2018 regarding a telephone call to Wyoming County residents from an individual claiming to be a representative from the Civil Division of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office.
The call additionally displays as 585-786-8989, which is a Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office administrative line. Neither the caller nor the call is originating from this Office and the caller is likely using technology to “spoof” his actual phone number. The caller claims to be a process server and alleges that a civil fee has been court-ordered and must be paid by a credit card. Similar scams have been reported in other counties in the state.
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office does not contact individuals by phone about court-ordered judgements. The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office will not ask for payment using credit cards or wire transfers, nor will they ask for a credit card number over the phone. Disregard any call from someone demanding cash payment and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone, unless you are sure you know the reason and to whom you are giving information to.
If you do receive a suspicious phone call that you’d like to report, please contact the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office by calling 9-1-1.
