BATAVIA/ Honoring the Flag

A Flag Day ceremony was held at the VA in Batavia on Sunday afternoon.

A memorial motorcycle motorcade was escorted from Stan’s Harley Davidson on West Saile drive to the VA on Richmond avenue to begin the ceremony.

Batavia Middle School students who participated in an essay contest about what the Flag means to them were on hand to read their essays to some of the veterans on hand.

The students chose to honor Leo Pelton, a 98 year old WWII veteran, and recognized him at the event. Frank Panepento and students presented a book with all of the student’s essays about the flag to Pelton and other veterans at the event.

The first recognized observance of Flag Day was at a school in Wisconsin in 1895.

Flag Day was established by a proclamation in 1916.
In 1949, National Flag Day was then established by an Act of Congress.

At the end of the ceremony, the St. Joe’s Brass Ensemble played several patriotic songs to honor the flag.
