On May 25th, Elizabeth Chavez started to go into labor, so she sent her husband, Luis Chavez to drop off their 2-year old son, Emmitt, at Luis’ parent’s house in Medina.
That’s when things started to get interesting.
Chavez called her mom, Dawn Videan of Batavia, to let her know she was in labor because her mom was going to be in the delivery room with them. Her mom was on the speaker phone when Elizabeth’s water broke and the contractions started to come faster.
Videan kept telling her daughter not to push, but Chavez told her mom it was too late.
After a couple of pushes, Leyla Chavez was born.
Within five minutes of Leyla’s birth, Luis walked in the door and heard screaming. Thinking that his wife was having a hard contraction, but that is when he heard a baby cry.
“I just walked into the bedroom thinking, “Oh my God” and I was in shock seeing the baby,” says Luis.
Leyla was born 7lbs 7 ounces and 19 inches long.
About 2:45a.m. the Oakfield Volunteer Fire Department got the call and was dispatched to the Chavez home, according to firefighter Josh Finn.
Chief Sean Downing, Assistant Chief Jeff McIntyre, and Firefighter Josh Finn showed up to assist Mercy EMS to make sure the baby and mother were fine. “We were only a few minutes past the birth, but it was still exciting to be a part of,” says Finn.
On Monday evening, the Oakfield Volunteer Fire Department decided to get together and get some gifts for the newest Oakfield resident. Elizabeth and her family received new hats, toys and gift cards for her and the new baby.
“It is not often that we get to witness a birth or see a new life come into the world and we wanted to do something nice for the family”.
