GENESEE COUNTY/Huddle planning a Women’s March to help empower women living in rural areas

A group seeking to empower women in the GLOW region held their first meeting on Tuesday evening at a home on Woodcrest Drive in Batavia.

The group’s organizer says that women in the GLOW region need to see their value and get involved by serving on advisory committees, library boards or running for elected office.

“We are trying to send a message that women have value and words and skills and trying to get women to be more active in our GLOW communities by using their skills,” says Dorothy Avery, Huddle Organizer.

Huddle for the Glow Region is planning the first ever Women’s March in the City of Batavia on January 20, 2019, to coincide with the National Women’s March.

Avery also helped organized the March for Our Lives event this past March in Batavia. The event was part of the national protest against gun violence in schools. 200 people attended the event and march.

“Part of the bigger picture is hopefully over the next few years we are looking to reach out to women and get them thinking differently, thinking about being active in their communities by stepping out of their comfort zones and recognizing their value by participating in the community where it has traditionally been men.”

Avery says that most rural areas are behind the times.

“I think its about being rural. I think women who run households are business women. It’s like running a small business, you have a budget, you have a million tasks to do and I think women and society does not value that work. We need to create an awareness for women to really recognize that they have value, they have something to contribute to the community and we would like to help coach them how to do that.”

The group plans to meet again on September 25th at 7:00 p.m. at a location to be announced.

If anyone is interested in checking out the group, they have formed a Facebook page called Huddle for the GLOW Region.
