GENESEE COUNTY/Oakfield man indicted on vehicular assault and DWI charges in Corfu accident

An Oakfield man has been indicted in a serious three vehicle accident that occurred on Rt. 33 in Corfu on April 18, 2018.

Jacob J. Szumigala, 24, of Orchard Park Road, Oakfield, is accused of the crimes of aggravated vehicular assault, a class C felony, vehicular assault 1st and vehicular assault 2nd, both class D felonies, after allegedly driving recklessly while operating a 2008 Hyundai Sonata in a manner which endangered others by causing serious physical injury to another person.

Szumigala is also accused of operating his vehicle with a BAC of .18%  of alcohol. He is accused of the crimes of aggravated DWI, as a misdemeanor, DWI, as a misdemeanor, and aggravated unlicensed operation 1st , a class E felony, after operating with a suspended license.

According to Undersheriff Greg Walker, a Hyundai Sonata was headed west on Rt. 33 traveling at high rate of speed when it rear ended a gray Honda Civic that was also headed westbound on Rt. 33.
The Hyundai Sonata then pushed the Honda Civic into a eastbound pick up truck. The driver of the gray Honda Civic, James M. Hoskins, of Corfu, suffered serious injuries and Crash Management was called to the scene to investigate the accident and the road was shut down for about 4 hours.
A driver and passenger in the pick up truck, Gerald D. Sanders and Lynn Sanders of Batavia, were transported to ECMC as a precaution. The male driver of the Hyundai Sonata, Jacob J. Szumigala, 24, of Oakfield, did not suffer any life threatening injuries.
