GENESEE COUNTY/Shooting death in Byron accidental, caused by careless handling of a gun

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is releasing additional information in regards to the investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on November 9, 2018 at about 11:45p.m. during a party at a barn in the rear of the property at 6409 Byron Holley Road in the Town of Byron.

John “Jack” Carney, 23, who resided at the address, was one of six people in attendance at the party.

Witnesses were interviewed and statements were provided to law enforcement in regards to the incident.

The 9mm Ruger semi-automatic was registered to Carney.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, after an investigation and discussions with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, has determined that Carney’s death was the result of an accidental shooting and it appears the leading cause was careless handling of a weapon.

The matter is still under investigation.
