GENESEE COUNTY/Oakfield man pleads guilty to aggravated vehicular assault in Corfu accident

Jacob J. Szumigala, 24, of Orchard Park Road, Oakfield, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault, a class C felony, aggravated DWI/misdemeanor (driving with a BAC  of .18% or more) and aggravated unlicensed operation 3rd in Genesee County Court on Thursday afternoon.

Szumigala was involved in a three vehicle serious accident on Rt. 33 in Corfu in April 18, 2018.

Szumigala who was driving a 2008 Hyundai Sonata, was headed west on Rt. 33 traveling at high rate of speed when he rear ended a gray Honda Civic that was also headed westbound on Rt. 33.
The Hyundai Sonata then pushed the Honda Civic into an eastbound pick up truck. The driver of the gray Honda Civic, James M. Hoskins, of Corfu, suffered serious injuries and Crash Management was called to the scene to investigate the accident and the road was shut down for about 4 hours.
A driver and passenger in the pick up truck, Gerald D. Sanders and Lynn Sanders of Batavia, were transported to ECMC as a precaution. Szumigala did not suffer any life threatening injuries.

As part of the plea deal, Szumigala will plead guilty in a pending DWI case in Town of Oakfield court.

He will be sentenced on January 15, 2019 at 1:30p.m.
