The Batavia Career and Technical Education Building Trades and Conservation Programs, along with homeowners Robert and Kimberly Maerten, held an open house on Thursday.
The home is located at 2968 Pike Road in Alexander and has three bedrooms, two and a half baths, a three-car garage, hand-shaved hickory floors, solid pine rustic doors, and has finished maple trim throughout.
All the lighting is LED and it operates with geothermal heating and air conditioning, has an on-demand water system as well as radiant heat floors in the mostly finished basement and garage. The main floor is about 2400 square feet as is the basement.
The home is 100 percent student crafted and Lead Carpentry Instructor Jared Radesi says the goal is to get as much experience as they can for all the students involved. Today the students were able to bring their families in to the home to show them what they have been working on.
“The students learn a little bit of everything to find their niche,” says Radesi.
“We teach employability first and what they pick up along the way is a bonus.”
Students range in age from 15-18 and can expect 100% job placement after graduating from the Building Trades Program.
“Already for next year we are working on the floor plan with the next homeowner,” says Sarah Luczak, Coordinator for Student Services.
She says there is a wait list of 10-15 houses currently.
Work on the current house started in September with the school year.
“The homeowners have three little ones and we’ve helped them build their dream home where they’re going to raise their children and live here essentially forever. It’s a maintenance free home, it’s green energy, it’s very well sealed,” says Radesi.
