Alexander P. Ortiz, 22, of Canary Street, Rochester, is charged with driving without insurance, failure to keep right and having a fake inspection after an accident on Rt. 33 in Stafford last Friday.
According to a Sheriff’s Department accident report, Ortiz was traveling west on Rt. 33 when he crossed over the yellow driving lane markings, striking a tractor trailer that was hauling garbage. As a result, the tractor trailer’s side front tire was torn from the vehicle and the operator of the tractor trailer, R.W. Skellen II, 40, of Scottsville lost control of the truck and drove into the westbound lane and began to jackknife and overturn. The tractor trailer then overturned coming to rest in a field on the north side of the road. The driver was hauling garbage for Silvarole trucking out of Rochester.
Ortiz’ vehicle continued west striking a yellow reflective traffic marker.
Ortiz told deputies he turned around to check on his 1 year old daughter, and he was singing to her at the time.
A third vehicle that was traveling west behind Ortiz sustained damage to the front bumper and windshield due to debris from the accident. The 17 year old driver of that vehicle was not injured.
Two people had minor injuries in the accident.
Crews from Scofield’s arrived on scene to assist in cleaning up the spilled garbage
