Second Assistant Chief Greg Johnson was named “Firefighter of the Year” at the Bethany Volunteer Fire Company’s Installation Banquet on Saturday evening at the Dibble Family Center in Batavia.
Johnson has been very instrumental in the training area the past few years and has held almost every job in the department since joining according to Fire Chief Jeff Fluker. He also has been in charge of inventory this year and has been a great help to the department.
The department responded to 148 calls in 2019 and has racked up 1,184 training hours.
Will Thurley received the EMS Award for 2019. He responded to 56 calls this past year as a new recruit, all while being in high school.
“He is always very eager and willing to learn and is very interested in all aspects of the department, he goes above and beyond,” says First Aid Captain Mel Davis.
Davis also welcomed back Wayne Walker, who recently returned to the Fire Police after having surgery and having a Left Ventricle Systems Device installed. He has been serving the department for 59 years.
William Shea was also recognized for 55 years of service to the department, beginning in 1963.
