Genesee County has been working on constructing a new Genesee County Jail for about three years. Since the last public informational meeting last spring, a lot has been accomplished.
Shelley Stein, Chair of the Genesee County Legislature, talks about what has been going on in the planning stages of the $60 million dollar jail project, and why a new jail is needed.
The current jail was constructed in 1902 with an addition added on in 1985, it holds 87 inmates, no females are housed their currently. In 2018, over ten counties were used to board out male and female inmates at a cost of over $600k plus staff and transport costs.
The new jail will have 184 beds, down from the original plan of 214 beds. In 2019, the amount of beds was updated to reflect the changes in population and the regulatory environment, including bail reform.
It will be located next to County Building 2 on West Main street road in the Town of Batavia.
The new jail is expected to be completed by 2022.
