On September 15, 2020, the City of Batavia Fire Department was contacted by Genesee County Dispatch for an odor of fuel in the area of the Genesee County County Courthouse at 1 West Main street.

Upon arrival, an oil sheen on the creek was observed by the responding City Fire crew.

“It appears that the substance was some form of fuel or oil in nature,” says Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano.

Napolitano says City Fire provided immediate hazardous materials mitigation efforts and was then assisted by Genesee County Office of Emergency Management Services who provided absorbent and control booms that were deployed.

Additional assistance was provided by the Stafford Fire Department, who provided a water tender to flush the storm sewer, and also the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

A third party environmental clean-up company was then contacted by the DEC to assist with further remediation.

The DEC is following-up with further investigation and enforcement.
