The Town of Batavia Fire Department responded to 4787 East road for a barn fire about 4:42p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Thick black smoke could be seen from the west side of Batavia in the late afternoon blaze. When fire crews arrived on scene, the barn was fully engulfed and had partially collapsed.
Fire Chief Dan Coffey says crews were in a defensive mode and worked to quell the heavy flames that threatened the residence just a short distance away from the burning barn. No one was inside the barn at the time. One of the homeowners was home and spotted the fire and called 911.
While the barn and it’s contents are a total loss, the residence was spared.
Coffey says the fire is under investigation, but they are looking into an external fire that got into the barn. “There was some burning today and we are looking at that as a potential cause,” says Coffey.
There were no injuries in the fire. Two firefighters were checked out on scene.
