The City of Batavia Fire Department was called to 162 State street at a little after 8:00a.m. on Thursday morning, for a working house fire.
According to Chief Napolitano, an off duty firefighter noticed the flames and went inside to check if anyone was home. After being met with heavy flames and smoke, the off duty firefighter left the residence.
When City fire crews arrived on scene they were able to darken down the flames and complete a search and a secondary search of the residence.
No one was home at the time of the fire. According to the Chief, three cats and a dog perished in the blaze.
Napolitano says they have not made contact with the resident(s) who live at the address.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
