GENESEE COUNTY/The Self- Care Shop is now open in LeRoy

58 Main street in LeRoy

Now more than at any other time, all of us need to practice some self-care during the ongoing pandemic, which has put our daily lives and normal everyday schedule in disarray.

The Self-Care Shop held its official grand opening in the village of LeRoy at 58 Main street with a ribbon cutting. Owner Tiffany Goodenough says the store is a place where you can walk in and and be welcomed with open arms.

“I always tell people how important self-care is, whether you are taking five minutes to yourself to sit down and do a quick meditation , do yoga, or read a book,” says Goodenough.

Goodenough and her family, husband Kyle, 10 year old Roland, 7 year old Addison and 2 year old Eliza Grace, all practice self -care daily.

She says its really important to instill self-care in kids at a young age, so as an adult they are not figuring out how to do it.

After becoming her mom’s caretaker during her cancer battle this past year, Goodenough says she had to practice self-care even more. At the time she was a manager at a halfway house, and as her mom grew more sick, she decided to leave her job and take care of her mom full time.

“Then the pandemic hits, and I’m like, oh my God.”

This past May, her mom passed away from stage 4 lung cancer.

“In October, I told my husband I really wanted to open a store and he said, “So do it!”

Goodenough says that when she sets her mind to something she really does it. “What made me want to do this was my mother, after she passed away. She loved to shop, she loved jewelry, and skin care cosmetics made in the U.S. that are free of gluten and parabens, we bonded on this while I was her caretaker.”

Goodenough knew she wanted to open her self-care shop in the Village of LeRoy on Main street. Goodenough contacted her best friend and girlfriend, Jessie Held and Tracy Martorana, owners of the Holistic Hub.

Due to the pandemic, the Hub had to close their doors in March and have not been able to reopen.

“So I messaged them,” says Goodenough.

She received an almost immediate response from them, asking if Goodenough wanted to have the Hub at 58 Main street.

Of course Goodenough jumped at the opportunity. She has also offered the former owners space for their non-profit project, the Empowered Arrow, after life gets back to normal.

The space has undergone some cosmetic upgrades and Goodenough, with the help of family and friends, has been putting her shop together since November.

She has found many U.S. vendors and three local vendors from the LeRoy/Caledonia area.

“I really want to support local as much as possible, I really like things made in the U.S.”

The shop is located a few minutes away from her home, and her children are helping out each day also.

“They have been working right along side me. My daughter Addison helped clean up the windows and is also making bracelets to sell, she wants to donate her proceeds to the Bivona Child Advocacy Center.”

Her son Roland has been assisting with cashing people out and helping stock the shelves with his younger sister Eliza Grace.

“I want to thank my husband who works a full time job, managing a restaurant 50 hours a week. I have spent a lot of late nights and early mornings in here and he has been here to mop the floors and paint, I am so thankful and blessed.”

Goodenough says one night, a LeRoy Police Officer assisted her in taking down an exterior sign.

“Family is the most important thing to both me and my husband. I love it. I love that I am able to be here in the village. They have welcomed me with open arms, they are so excited this is here.”

There is nothing like this around here, says Goodenough.

“People are looking at me like I’m crazy to open up a business in a pandemic. I have faith that this is what I was meant to do. I love helping people. I managed a halfway house, went to school for addiction and counseling the last four years. I needed to take care of my mom and my children and give them more attention and this is a perfect balance.”
