Press release

BATAVIA, NEW YORK – CAN-USA Sports LLC is excited to be keeping baseball in Batavia! Owners Robbie and Nellie Nichols have secured the rights and a lease to Dwyer Stadium and will bring a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League team to the city of Batavia for at least the next 5 years.

With minor league franchises all over the country being ripped away from beloved fanbases the Nichols’ stepped in to make sure that the sights and sounds of baseball would not be taken from a town rich in baseball history.

Dating back to May 14, 1897 Batavia played in the New York State League as the Batavia Giants. Since then the Batavia franchise joined the PONY League from 1939-1953 before jumping into the now defunct New York-Penn League since 1957. Though the name has changed over time from Indians to the Pirates then the Trojans and Clippers, Muckdogs baseball has stuck in Batavia.

The storied franchise has had 20 no hitters and two perfect games, four League titles, and six division titles. The alumni who have played here range from World Series Champions to All Stars to NHL and NFL athletes. Dwyer Stadium is and will continue to be an asset to the community.

The Nichols have revitalized a baseball community in Elmira, NY. Not only is there baseball and the atmosphere that comes with it in historic Dunn Field in Elmira, where they own the Elmira Pioneers, but there is a sentiment of giving back. The Pioneers are active in the Community attending Parades, hosting many special events, and giving back to the community who gives so much to the team during the season. Though there will be a team here the Nichols are invested in making this a community ballpark. There will be High School and Little League tournaments here on the same field where MLB prospects are playing.

The Pioneers who are also owned by the Nichols have been top 10 in the country in attendance for the past decade, another tradition they plan on bringing to Batavia.

CAN-USA Sports LLC Owner Robbie Nichols told media members “We look forward to bringing a team back to Batavia, a city rich in baseball history. This field and stadium are in amazing condition and it will be extra special to see the grandstands

full of people cheering on the newest addition to the long illustrious history of Batavia baseball.”

The Batavia Team will play in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The league is one of the top rated summer leagues in the country. The leagues consists of 14 teams: the Adirondack Trail Blazers, Albany Ductchmen, Amsterdam Mohawks, Elmira Pioneers, Geneva Red Wings, Glens Falls Dragons, Jamestown Tarp Skunks, Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, Newark Pilots, Saugerties Stallions, Utica Blue Sox, and the Watertown Rapids. Many players are drafted every year from the PGCBL and many go on to be drafted by the MLB and play for MLB teams.

The President of the PGCBL Robert Julian was very excited about the team from Batavia joining the league. “Batavia is a very important addition to our league. It is a first class baseball town with dedicated fans and a beautiful facility. We know that we can provide Batavia baseball fans with a very high quality competition and an excellent fan setting. Rob Nichols and his group are first class operators who will provide a great overall fan experience. Welcome Batavia!”

Press release

BATAVIA, NEW YORK -The Muckdogs are proud to announce their first signing for the 2021 campaign is complete as they bring on Manager/Head Coach Jose (Joe) Martinez.

Martinez returns to the PGCBL where he had success as the head coach of the Utica (NY) Blue Sox. In 2018, Joe team finished with a 25-21 record. Under Martinez’s leadership, the Blue Sox placed five players on the PGCBL All Star team and a host of players on the PGCBL All League list at the conclusion of the season. Joe’s team finished third in the PGCBL in team batting average and finished the year with the most single-season “walk off” wins in Blue Sox history.

In addition to his time managing in the PGCBL, Martinez has additionally served as the head instructor and assistant coach at the Frozen Ropes Baseball Academy, owner/operator of the Scorpion Baseball Academy, and assistant coach/hitting instructor in the Tidewater College Summer League. As a professional player, Joe played shortstop for the Detroit Tigers for two seasons and played in the AA Puerto Rico Winter League (1995-1996). Martinez played college baseball at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, earning All-Conference recognition both seasons and being voted Team Captain and MVP by his teammates. Joe hit a smooth .435 in his first season and .465 in his second season.

Coach Martinez was very excited to get going in Batavia “I am originally from the city so going up (to central NY) is like a coming home party for me. This is where my baseball career started.” Martinez continued “The PGCBL is one of the top leagues in the country. It is very well organized and very professional. The talent that this league brings in makes it a great place to be. I have some solid commitments and every day I’m on the phone. I am talking with guys from Memphis University, Princeton, Tallahassee, Montevallo, University of Texas, Alabama State, and we are working on bringing them here to Batavia. This ballpark alone is such a huge recruiting tool. Being a newer field, it is a huge selling point for me with these recruits.”

When discussing what made Batavia and CAN-USA Sports the right decision to come back to play Joe said “Robbie is super professional. We have been very straight forward and I am looking forward to working with him. Everyone in this league says he does things the right way. Hopefully, this will be a long term relationship where we are competing for a championship year in and year out.”

Press release

BATAVIA, NEW YORK- CAN-USA Sports is proud to announce that after much consideration the new Batavia Baseball team will continue to be known as the Batavia Muckdogs.

CAN-USA Sports considered many alternatives to pay homage to the great area of Batavia, but it was in talking with people from the area that showed this area loved its Muckdogs and the name will remain at home in Dwyer Stadium.

CAN-USA Sports owner Robbie Nichols was quick to tell the story “We thought of a bunch of different names, but in speaking to the ownership, city officials, and people of Batavia it became obvious that with a 20 year history and such an amazing following it would be a mistake to try to replace the name.”

The Muckdogs first took the field in 1998 and captured three division titles in 2008, 2010, and in what would be their final season of 2019. Batavia also brought a League title back to Dwyer Stadium in 2008.

Brian Paris, the President of the Genesee County Baseball Club, is excited that the Batavia Muckdogs will continue to use this name and logo. “This familiar and beloved logo will once again be seen at Dwyer Stadium this summer as we welcome back baseball to Batavia. We look forward to seeing everyone at the ball park this summer!”

Nichols was quick to add “This team has a history in name and of winning. We plan to continue to write that history here in Batavia and make Dwyer Stadium the place to be all summer.”
