The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public to be aware of asphalt paving and sealing scams as the weather warms up.
Residents should be cautious if they are solicited by anyone who alleges to be a contractor offering to pave or seal their driveway with leftover or extra asphalt or sealer from another job in the neighborhood. The offer includes a discount rate to pave the homeowner’s driveway.
The Sheriff’s Office says the alleged contractor will make the deal sound too good to be true and will pressure the resident to make a quick decision agreeing to have the work done, which then often leads to a different price on the final bill, which is higher than what was originally agreed to. The Sheriff’s Office says the scammers tend to use sub-par product and poor application methods.
The Sheriff’s Office has received one recent complaint within Genesee County of this type of scam. During this reported incident, the homeowner was suspicious and denied the scammer’s offer.
The Sheriff’s Office is looking to make residents aware of the scam and exercise good judgement when solicited for such services.
If residents become aware of this scam activity in their neighborhood, they can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 585-343-5000 for non-emergency and 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
