Attica, NY – Officers processing inmate mail discovered illegal drugs in three packages that were received last week at the medium security correctional last week.
In two of the drug seizures, the drugs were mailed to the same inmate from the same address just two days apart.
On Sunday, June 6, an officer processing boxes of cigars mailed from a Rochester address discovered one of the boxes was tampered with. The boxes were opened and the officer discovered that several of the boxes included a green leafy substance stuffed inside the cigars. The drugs, which is believed to be either marijuana or synthetic marijuana, weighed 18 grams.
On Tuesday, June 8, an officer processing packages of cookies mailed to the same inmate from the same Rochester address, discovered that several of the packages were tampered with. The packages were opened and 37 Suboxone strips were recovered inside.
On Wednesday, June 9, an officer processing a package of cigars mailed from Buffalo, discovered several of the packages were altered. The drugs in the three seizures were placed in evidence.
“There is no legitimate reason DOCCS can put forth not to reinstate the Secure Vendor Program. It will significantly reduce the amount the drugs that get inside prisons and still provide inmates access to the items that get mailed to them currently from family and friends. The program will also relieve staff of having to process thousands of pieces of mail and packages, many of which contain contraband. It will only make our prisons safer for our members and that is just simple common sense. ” – stated Mark Deburgomaster, NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President.
