After three generations of farming, Porter Family Farms has opened a store at 4911 Edgerton road in Elba.
The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce helped celebrate their opening with an official Ribbon cutting on Saturday morning.
“It was always my Dad and Uncle Mike who wanted to have a little store here,” says Katie Porter -Metzler, who is the third generation of her family to work the family farm.
“We have all our customers who come in for the CSA(Community Supported Agriculture) and we have people from Buffalo and Rochester who have been members for 20 plus years, they come every week for their share and pick up vegetables each week,” says Metzler.
The Porter Family farm has participated in CSA since 1996.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model of agriculture that promotes a direct relationship between the farmer and the community. It offers fair prices for both the farmer and the members by eliminating the middleman.
Members of the community purchase a share of the farm’s annual harvest before the growing season. Shareholders then visit the farm or the box share pick up site weekly to pick up their share of the farm’s harvest of the fresh produce.
“It’s a family farm, you can’t get anymore local than coming right out here, especially during the pandemic, you can’t depend on these big grocery stores to have everything you might need.”
The store will offer maple syrup and elderberry syrup made by local friends from the area. They will also have potted herbs, local honey, and Porter Farms All-Natural ground beef and lamb for sale along with Porter Farms gear.
The store will be open Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00am-3:00p.m.
