A 24-year-old woman has died after falling into the gorge at Warsaw Falls in the Village of Warsaw. Her body was located by the Wyoming County Rope Rescue Team and the Warsaw Fire Department as they were searching the creek at the bottom of the gorge on Wednesday afternoon.
Warsaw Police Chief Peter Hoffmeister says the Warsaw Police Department responded to a check the welfare call at her residence in Warsaw on Wednesday morning about 11:30a.m. after they were contacted by her family who could not reach her by phone, and she did not show up for work. Officers found no one was home when they responded to her residence.
Chief Hoffmeister says the woman enjoyed hiking, and according to friends, she was going hiking at about noon on Tuesday at Warsaw Park. Police did locate her vehicle there and did notice footprints in the snow leading up to the top of the trail. She was hiking alone. At about 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, the Wyoming County Rope Rescue Team consisting of the following Fire Companies: Attica, Bennington, Cowlesville, Sheldon, Wyoming, Perry, along with Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, Warsaw Police Department and the NYS Police set up a command center. Drones were used to search the area around Warsaw Falls. The victim’s cell phone was located on the trail leading up to the top of the gorge.
After several hours of searching the area, the victim was located deceased at the bottom of the gorge after falling about 125 feet into the gorge. According to Chief Hoffmeister, conditions on the trail and the at the top of the gorge were slick and icy. Search crews were on scene until about 4:30p.m.
The 24-year-old woman had just moved to Warsaw from the Rochester area. Her name is not being released at this time according to Chief Hoffmeister.
