Wyoming County Treasurer, Cheryl D. Mayer, has announced her early retirement citing health reasons.
Mayer began her employment with Wyoming County in 1993 serving in various positions at Wyoming County Community Hospital before moving to the County Administrator’s Office as Administrative Assistant while completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Economics.
In 1998, the title of Purchasing Administrator was added to her responsibilities when she obtained her purchasing certification from the National Institute of Government Purchasing.
In 2002, when the County Administrator position became vacant the responsibilities of that position were reassigned to the County Treasurer’s Office. In 2005 she decided to seek the County Treasurer position following the retirement of John Edwards and successfully obtained the Republican Party line resulting in her first of five 4-year term as County Treasurer.
Mayer served as President of the New York State County Treasurer and Finance Officer Association in 2016 and in May 2017, she was recognized by a vote of her peers as the County Finance Official of the Year by members of the New York State County Treasurers” and Finance Officers’ Association.
In announcing her retirement, Mayer said that the time she has served in the elected office of Wyoming County Treasurer has been some of the most rewarding years of her life and she strongly recommends that the position of County Treasurer continue to be an elected position for many years to come, as it offers the best true opportunity to provide the checks and balances that all governments should aspire to provide to their constitutes providing an independent advocate for the taxpayers.
As Chief Fiscal Officer and Tax Enforcement Officer for the County of Wyoming, the Treasurer oversees an office that is open Monday through Friday as well as maintaining online information for electronic transactions. The Treasurer maintains all accounting software records for financial statements, audit, banking deposits and investments, debt issuance, payroll among others.
Mayer believes that this office elected directly by the voters in a County-wide belongs to the voters. She is excited to leave the roll of Treasurer in the hands of her Deputy Treasurer, Robin LaWall whose experience will help her team maintain a professional and independent checks and balances for Wyoming County residents.
