In observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, Criminal Justice Day 2022 was held at the Conable Technology Building at Genesee Community College on Monday morning.
Each year in April, the Office for Victims of Crime helps lead communities throughout the
country in its annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is
being observed this week, April 24-30.
This year’s theme is “Rights, Access, Equity for all victims”
Gwendolyn Maturo-Grasso was one of the guest speakers and is a DWI victim survivor. Her son, Larry Maturo Jr., was killed in 2018 by a hit and run drunk driver. Grasso and her unborn son were also the victims of a drunk driver when she was 5 months pregnant. She is a retired middle school teacher after 34 years in the Syracuse City Schools and currently resides in Lyons, NY with her husband Richard.
Other speakers at today’s event, Brenda McQuillan, PhD,LCSW-who spoke on child victimization and Carrie Swearingen, a domestic violence survivor.

Genesee County Crime Victims’ Rights Week Committee, Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (GCASA), Genesee County District Attorney’s Office, Genesee County Mental Health, Genesee County Office for the Aging, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Genesee Justice, Mental Health Association of Genesee and Orleans Counties, and YWCA of Genesee County.
