BATAVIA/Red Cross assisting resident after Friday night house fire

On Friday May 13, 2022, at 8:53 pm, the City of Batavia Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 29 Montclair Ave. in the City of Batavia.  Initial fire units arrived at 8:55 pm to find a large volume of fire from the front of a two and a half story, single family home.  Fire crews knocked down the bulk of the fire and entered the home to find a fire on the first and second floors and also extended into the attic.  Crews were initially hampered by downed power lines and difficult access to the rear of the house.  Several occupants were home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed prior to the fire department arrival.  One resident is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No civilian injuries were reported.  There was one firefighter transported to the hospital by fire department personnel for heat exhaustion.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the City of Batavia Fire and Police Departments.

The City of Batavia Fire Department was assisted by the City of Batavia Police, City Water Department, Town of Batavia FD, Alexander FD, Elba FD, Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center, Red Cross, National Grid and National Fuel.

City Fire responded to 29 Montclair avenue about 9:00p.m. on Friday night after receiving a call of a couch set on fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire in the front of the house and a second alarm was requested for manpower.

According to Interim City of Batavia Fire Chief Dan Herberger, 6 people were in the residence at the time of the fire and were able to get out of the house. An electric service line from the house also caught fire and fell across the road and was arcing as firefighters were attempting to gain access to the house. National Grid responded to cut the line.

Herberger says no one was injured in the fire and one resident is being assisted by the Red Cross. A board up company was called to the scene to secure the residence. The home to the south of the fire suffered heat damage to the siding from the blaze.

City of Batavia Police are assisting the Fire Department with the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Elba, Town of Batavia and Alexander Fire Department responded for the second alarm response.
