This was the first Memorial Day Ceremony at the WNY National Cemetery in Pembroke. Since opening in November of 2020, 972 veterans and family members have been interred at the cemetery located on Indian Falls road.
Today’s ceremony was provided by the WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council. According to James Metcalfe, Director of the WNY Veteran’s Cemetery, in 1862, the second year of the Civil War, 14 Cemetaries were established. In 1869, the first Decoration Day occurred. In 1971 it grew into Memorial Day.
