Genesee Cancer Assistance held their 27th Annual Golf Tournament at Terry Hills on Saturday.
36 teams participated in this year’s sold-out event, about 144 golfers total. There were 180 door prizes, 15 big ticket items and 10 auction items. Donations came from many different WNY businesses and members of the community.
Executive Director Sue Underwood says the tournament raised $28,000 last year and this year they hope to raise more than $30,000.
“We’re just very grateful for whatever we can get from this event, not only does it let people know who we are, but the thing about Genesee Cancer is unless you need us you don’t necessarily know about us. The community is small enough that once they learn about us and what we do, and if they have a story that is related to cancer, that touches their lives,” says Underwood.
Underwood says that is how she became involved in 2010.
“I got involved being a cancer survivor, my daughter Kayla is a cancer survivor, you meet people along the journey, you help them, you help them with their finances but there is always a little bit more connected to it, it makes it real rewarding.”
The tournament is the group’s main fundraiser for the year. The funds are used to provide assistance to cancer patients in Genesee County.
“We’ve done spaghetti dinners, but this is big one, a lot of work. a lot of details, a lot of people. It’s encouraging to see the people who are willing to donate and help us out, we even have sponsors from Erie County.”
Due to COVID Protocols, their office at 207 Summit street is only open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-12pm. Call 585-345-0417 or email Sue Underwood at sue@geneseecancerassistance.org
