ORLEANS COUNTY/Persistence pays off in search for missing elderly man in Clarendon

Ryan MacIntyre is forever grateful to the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department for their persistence in locating his elderly father who went missing after driving to the corner gas station in Clarendon on Sunday January 22nd about 6:00p.m.

He had apparently become disoriented during snowy weather and missed his turn upon returning home and ended up a mile south of his residence. 72-year-old Douglas MacIntyre decided to turn around on Transit Road where a portion is unpaved.

“He got turned around in a laneway in the muck,” says Chief Deputy Rob Riemer with the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office.

“The car was still running with its flashers on, he was not hurt.”

Douglas stayed with his vehicle in the muck for about 15 hours.

“Sgt. David Foeller asked if it would be possible he was in the muck,” says his son Ryan.

“I said absolutely given all he had to do was miss my street and go a bit further. We agreed it was a worst-case scenario potentially, but it would be possible that he could be in there. He made that call to me at 7:59 a.m. and my father was located at 8:12 a.m.”

After searching the area of Transit Road the night before, Sgt. Foeller decided to check the area again during daylight hours with the assistance of Lt. Steve Fox, Deputy Jeff Cole and Deputy Corey Ambrose.

It’s possible Douglas could have been driving around the neighborhood during the search the night before and was not on Transit Road at that point, according to Chief Deputy Riemer.

Ryan credits Sgt. Foeller and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department for being persistent and continuing to follow up the next day.

“He(Sgt. Foeller) dropped my dad off at home and offered his assistance if needed at a later time to locate the vehicle. My dad was somehow able to manage and keep the vehicle idling and have heat and resist the urge to try to continue on foot. Thank God, he never would have made it.”
