David Culver with City Police Chief Shawn Heubusch at the Batavia City Council Meeting on Monday evening, donating privacy shields to City PD.
David Culver lost his wife in November of 2022.
“Unfortunately, my wife Tammy had passed away in our driveway,” said Culver.
During the incident in the driveway, EMS, police and fire were on scene for a total of 2.5 hours. During this time, onlookers had gathered at the scene watching and looking to see what had happened.
“My wife Tammy was always very vain, and this would have driven her crazy knowing there were people out there watching and looking. It was uncomfortable sitting there the entire time trying to wait for everything, and everybody has to come out and look and see, we just wanted privacy.”
While waiting with police, who later attempted to move police cars around the scene to create more privacy, Culver overheard several officers say they wished something could be done with some sort of portable barricade that could fit in their vehicles.
“This inspired us to look and see if we could find something for the City,” said Culver.
After speaking with City Fire Chief Josh Graham, who gave Culver a tip where to find a portable privacy shield, in Australia, Culver purchased six privacy shields at a cost of $1,500. Two shields will now be available for City PD, two for City Fire and two for Mercy EMS. Straps, clips and stakes are also included with the shields.
On each privacy shield there is a memorial to Tammy Culver so she will always be remembered. The owner of T-Shirts Etc., Brian Kemp, assisted with labeling each shield with the memorial message.
“We’re just happy to give back to the community and we are very thankful for what they did and the concern they showed us, we thought they went above and beyond their duties. We are hoping that no one else has to go through what we did.”
