A 25-year-old man was killed on Route 63 at the intersection with Court Road, in the Town
of Covington late Wednesday afternoon, when his motorcycle struck another vehicle.
At about 3:49p.m., the Wyoming County 911 Center received the report of a
serious injury collision involving a motorcycle and vehicle. A Wyoming County Deputy Sheriff
arrived on scene and located the motorcycle operator unresponsive in the roadway. Lifesaving
efforts were rendered by passing motorists and first responders but were unsuccessful.
Following an investigation at the scene, multiple witness interviews, and scene reconstruction by
the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office Crash Management Team, the following events were
determined to have led to the collision.
Nicolas T. Stutes, 25, of Retsof, NY, was operating a 2013 Triumph motorcycle northwest on Route 63 when he maneuvered into the oncoming lane and was passing a long line of vehicles at a high rate of speed. Within the line of vehicles was a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox which was engaged in making a left turn onto Court Road.
During the course of passing the line of vehicles, Stutes’ motorcycle struck the rear left corner of
the Chevrolet Equinox as it turned left, ejecting Stutes from the motorcycle and sending the
Chevrolet Equinox off the roadway and into a utility pole. Stutes was pronounced deceased at
the scene, and no injuries were reported by occupants of the Chevrolet Equinox
