On March 30th, 2024 at approximately 10:48 p.m. deputies from the Wyoming County Sheriff’s
Office were dispatched to a pickup truck in the ditch on Buck Road in the Town of Warsaw.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the operator, Joseph Shaffner, 40, of Freedom, NY. Deputies recognized alleged signs of impairment. Shaffner was then asked to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests which he performed poorly on. Shaffner was then transported to the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office
where he submitted to a breath test to determine his blood alcohol content (BAC). Shaffner was
found to be above the legal limit.
Shaffner was arrested and charged with DWI, and driving with a BAC of .08% or higher,
along with other vehicle and traffic infractions. Shaffner was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in Warsaw Town Court at a later date.

Following an accident on Canaway Road in the Town of Middlebury on March 22, 2024, where a tractor trailer struck a utility pole, Marius Mondesir, 66, of Linden, NY, was arrested for a logbook violation.
Mondesir was operating his tractor trailer on a restricted highway when he lost control and
struck a utility pole. No injuries were reported.
After further investigation, Mondesir allegedly did not have an accurate logbook. Mondesir was arrested for a logbook violation under the transportation law and issued multiple other uniform traffic tickets. Mondesir will appear in the Town of Middlebury Court at a later date and time.

On March 26, 2024, at approximately 8:52p.m., a deputy from the Wyoming County Sheriff’s
Office conducted a traffic stop on Route 20A in the Town of Orangeville, after observing
multiple violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
The operator of the vehicle identified himself as Joshua D. Long, 36, of Lakeview, NY. Long was found to have a revoked New York State driver’s license, with a total of five suspensions/revocations. Long was also found to be in possession of a metal knuckle knife, a prohibited weapon under the New York State Penal
Law.
Long was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Third Degree, as well as multiple vehicle and traffic violations. Long was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Orangeville Court at a later date.

On March 19, 2024, at approximately 7:47p.m., deputies from the Wyoming County Sheriff’s
Office responded to the area of Centerline Road, west of Maxon Road, in the Town of Sheldon,
for the report of a serious motor vehicle accident.
Upon arrival, deputies located the involved vehicle, approximately thirty feet down an embankment, with the operator trapped inside.
Members of the Varysburg Fire Department and Wyoming County EMS arrived on scene and
assisted deputies with extricating the operator from the vehicle.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Shane T. Furr, 50, of Sheldon, NY. While speaking with Furr, investigating deputies began to observe signs of possible intoxication. A DWI investigation was conducted and Furr was subsequently arrested.
Furr is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Consumption of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle,
Refusal to Take a Breath Test, No Seat Belt-Operator, Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent and
Failed to Keep Right.
Furr was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Sheldon Court at a later date.

On March 30, 2024, at approximately 4:38p.m., a deputy from the Wyoming County Sheriff’s
Office conducted a traffic stop on Route 20A in the Town of Orangeville, after observing
multiple violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Contact was made with the operator of the vehicle, who was identified as Steven Soto, 32, of Buffalo. NY. While speaking with Soto, deputies observed signs of possible impairment and a DWI investigation was conducted.
The investigation included Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. Soto performed poorly on the testing and was subsequently arrested for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Following the roadside testing, Soto was transported to the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office, where he was evaluated by a New York State certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
At the conclusion of the evaluation, the DRE advised that it was their professional opinion that
Soto was allegedly impaired by drugs, and unable to operate a vehicle safely.
During the investigation, Soto was also found to be in possession of Tramadol Hydrocholoride
(controlled substance), as well as a metal knuckle knife.
Soto is charged with Aggravated DWI (child passenger less than 16), Driving While Ability
Impaired by Drugs, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled
Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Consumption of Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle, as well as multiple other Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations.
Soto was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Orangeville Court at a later date.

On May 29, 2023, at approximately 5:07p.m., a Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a
vehicle for an exhaust violation on Route 20A in the Town of Sheldon.
After a brief investigation, Amy Carpenter, 48, of Attica, NY, was found to be in violation of a stay away order of protection. Carpenter was in the vehicle with the protected party.
Carpenter was arrested and charged with Criminal Contempt in the second degree.
Carpenter was arraigned in Sheldon Town Court and remanded to the Wyoming County Jail in lieu of
bail. Carpenter is set to appear in Sheldon Town Court on April 16, 2024.

On May 29, 2023, at approximately 5:07 p.m., a Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office Deputy stopped a
vehicle for an exhaust violation on Route 20A in the Town of Sheldon.
After a DMV check it was discovered that the driver, Richard Carpenter, 62, of Varysburg, NY, had a revoked New York State driver’s due to a previous Driving While Intoxicated conviction.
Carpenter was arrested and charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Second
Degree along with other traffic infractions. Carpenter was released on appearance tickets and is to
appear in Sheldon Town Court on April 15, 2024.

On April 1, 2024, at around 6:13a.m., a deputy with the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office was
patrolling northbound on Hermitage Road in the Town of Wethersfield, when another vehicle
was observed traveling southbound.
A registration check showed the vehicle’s registration was suspended for an insurance lapse and a vehicle and traffic enforcement stop was initiated on Hermitage Road near Mote Road.
The driver was identified as Ronald J. Russell, 44, of Cheektowaga, NY.
Russel was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration. Following processing roadside, he was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Wethersfield Town Court at a later date.
