GENESEE COUNTY/Byron/Health Department looking for information in a dog bite incident

Press release

The Genesee County Health Department is seeking information about the location of a dog and its owner following a dog bite incident on Sunday, March 31. The incident occurred at Crosby’s (6890 Byron Holley Road) in Byron, NY.

The owner was a male, medium build, with two dogs on flex leashes. The dog involved in the incident was described as a mixed breed, mostly white, long hair, and medium sized on a retractable leash.

The health department is trying to avoid unnecessary medical treatment for the victim, so it is important to locate the dog. If the dog is identified, the health department will request that the owner confine the dog at their residence for a ten-day observation period to monitor for symptoms of rabies. If the dog remains healthy following the biting incident, it is then determined that there was no risk of rabies transmission through the saliva at the time of the bite incident and post-exposure rabies vaccinations will not be recommended for the victim. If the status of the dog cannot be identified, post-exposure rabies shots will be recommended to the victim.

If you have information about the location of the dog and its owner, please contact the Genesee County Health Department at 585-344-2580 ext. 5555

  1. I got bit by a cat, they had me do rabies shots within 1 day, by sherriff escort. I’m fine with that…. but why all the changes in rabies standards in humans? For rabies shots to be most effective, they have to be given on day 0, 3, 7, and 14. Once you start the waiting game, the risk of rabies death starts increasing exponentially. The health department has recently changed the policy and they are going to kill people. You can’t play the waiting game. The health department really needs to do some research about this subject. If you are going to work in medical, know your stuff.

  2. Every day the victim waits, the higher their risk. The county is mandated to pay the steep bill for all treatments. Is this why they are now gambling with people’s lives? I would sue.

  3. Generally, they admit you directly to ER for 1st dose, immediately. Why are we now waiting weeks for care? That’s when the virus spreads and causes atrociously terrible death. I have never heard of any health department waiting.
