Companion Care of Rochester (CCOR) held a Grand Opening at their new location at 32 Ellicott Street/corner of Evans Street, in the City of Batavia on Thursday afternoon.

This is the company’s fifth location since opening in 1997 in Rochester. CCOR works with you and your loved ones along with doctors to create a plan of care that keeps your loved one independent in their home. They can assist with toileting, filling a pillbox, household chores, getting dressed, showering, meal prep, shopping and errands, laundry, transportation, getting out of bed, medical appointments and managing your medical needs.

Al Gauvin started Companion Care of Rochester after taking care of his sister who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Read about his story here CCOR History (ccorhome.com).

His experience with attempting to set up care for his sister at home made him realize that there was a real need for home care. At the time, Gauvin had no experience in companion care, but thought there must be a “Better Way”.

After traveling to Geneva quite often, Gauvin saw a need there as well. Companion Care of Rochester then opened its second office there. Soon, an office in Geneseo and Buffalo were also added.

“We quickly discovered that people in Geneva want to be taken care of by people in Geneva. If you’re from Batavia and you grew up in Batavia, a person from Rochester might as well be from Mars as far as you’re concerned. They don’t know the area; they don’t know anything. That’s the reason I just found it’s better to have an office local than it is to commute from Rochester or Buffalo,” says Al Gauvin, Chairman of the Board at CCOR.

Personal Care Aids (PCA’s) are trained at CCOR, they spend 40 hours learning to become PCA’s, or they have prior experience, or come with their own certification which is required by the State of New York.

“One of the beautiful things I love about being at CCOR is it’s a family run business, and the people who work for us are our family members and the clients we serve are our family members as well. We treat everyone like they’re our own,” says Cheryl Dinolfo, CEO at CCOR.

“We’re there to serve people who are really underserved, and we want to fill that need.”

Currently there are 40 employees at the new Batavia Office at 32 Ellicott Street/Suite 100. Gauvin says they hope to have 150 because that’s what the current needs are in this area.

CCOR moved into the office a few months ago and rehabbed it before moving in. CCOR has been providing services to residents of Batavia with the help of those in other offices.

“We centralize intake, although once the intake is taken, we send out to the different regions. There are 4 people who live right in Batavia, and they rotate in here, we like to have our employees come together as a complete unit,” says Dinolfo.

Angela Gioia, who is from Batavia, is the Supervisor of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistant Program (CDPAP). The program allows family, friends or loved ones to be your trusted caregiver, allowing the consumer to choose who is providing their care in their home, giving them the freedom to choose what agency provides the fiscal and intermediate services.

“It means a lot to me to work where I live and support the people that I’ve known my whole life. I was born and raised in Batavia, my mom ran the Office for the Aging for 25 years. I know a lot of the people in this community. It’s very fulfilling to give back and see them stay home, receiving support and services. There’s nothing like home, living here and working here is a perfect fit for me”
