(Information from a provided press release from the Batavia Police Department)

Martin F. Jones, 53, of Batavia, NY, was arrested on June 28, 2024, following a brief stand-off on South Main Street in the City of Batavia.

At approximately 12:00 PM on June 28, 2024, the Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center in Batavia received a call from a resident of an apartment at 11 South Main Street stating that a male was at the apartment attempting to break-in. It was further reported the male was in possession of a gun and had threatened the caller following an earlier verbal altercation with the male.

Upon arrival of officers, it was learned the suspect, who had retreated into another apartment in the building, threatened the use of an “AK” before retreating into his apartment. The suspect was identified as Martin F. Jones. Officers evacuated the tenants of the apartment and attempted to make contact with Jones through the door, however Jones refused to comply with officer’s request to exit the apartment.

Out of an abundance of caution, the area of South Main Street between Oak Street and the foot bridge was closed, and a perimeter was set up on the residence. Batavia Police officers, assisted by members of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police – Troop A made contact with the residents in the area advising them to evacuate their residence if able or shelter in place if not able to leave.

After approximately 2 hours, members of the Batavia Police Department’s Crisis Negotiations Team were able to successfully get Jones to surrender without further incident. Jones was taken into custody and processed on the criminal charges listed below. The street was re-opened and residents advised they could return to their normal routines at that time.

Jones is charged with Burglary in the 2nd degree, Menacing in the 3rd degree and Harassment in the 2nd degree. He was processed and arraigned in City Court and was remanded to the Genesee County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance.
