Press release
In an exciting title match between former league bowling teammates, Batavia native Pat Donaghue edged lifelong Batavian Mike Pettinella for the 60-and-Over Tour presented by Batavia Downs Gaming title Sunday at Mancuso Bowling Center.
Donaghue, who rolled a 299 game during the qualifying round, struck in the 9th frame and three times in the 10th frame to defeat Pettinella, 229-226, for the $480 top prize. It is Donaghue’s second Tour victory, having won at Mancuso’s two years ago.
Pettinella, looking for his third Tour title, needed two strikes in the 10th frame but left a solid 10-pin on the first ball. Still, he earned $380 for his efforts.
The right-handers were teammates in the Classic League in the late 1970s before Donaghue, 65, moved to Rochester. A champion on the PBA Regional Tour, he resides in Pittsford.
Donaghue – who averaged 251 for his seven games — reached the final match with a 264-205 win over Jim Shelly of Honeoye Falls while Pettinella, 69, advanced with a 226-172 win over Carl Kinyon of Lockport. Shelly and Kinyon earned $260 each.
Three other local bowlers – Batavians Paul Spiotta and Gregg Wolff and Medina’s Bob Hodgson — made it to match play, winning $120 each. Spiotta and Hodgson have cashed in all three events this season.
