This year the event is taking place on December 14th with a start time of 12:00p.m. at the WNY National Cemetery. The WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council is again running the event. The Memorial Council is the non-profit organization which runs many of the events at the WNY National Cemetery including maintaining the Avenue of Flags and supporting the Honor Guard.
The Wreaths Across America Day event is a nationwide event that has over 4,000 cemeteries participating. The goal is to honor all of our veterans at the WNY Cemetery with wreaths on each headstone. There are over 2,000 grave sites that need to be decorated. The event is open to the entire community. There is a short ceremony with the presenting of colors, laying of ceremonial wreaths by representatives of each military branch, a few very brief speeches and the playing of Taps. Immediately following the ceremony, those in attendance who have loved ones buried here will have 5 minutes to place a wreath on the headstone of their family member and spend time reflecting. After the 5 minutes, the entire community of volunteers will help to place the 2,000 plus wreaths on all the remaining headstones.
Members of the Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club will help direct and facilitate volunteers to the proper sections and rows where they will receive one wreath at a time and can return for more until all the headstones are covered.
NOTE:
There are MAJOR changes to the parking of attendees this year.
All Parking will be at the Pembroke High School, 8750 Alleghany Rd, Corfu, NY 14086. Buses will transport all attendees to and from the event. Seven buses will run in a constant loop between the school and cemetery starting at 10:30. and until everyone is back at their car. There will be two small buses moving people inside the cemetery for those that need it. There is Handicap parking available at the Cemetery for those that need it. Parking on Indian Falls Rd., Gabbey Rd., and Route 77 will be closed on the day of the event.
Wreaths can be purchased a number of ways and $5 from each purchase will go to the WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council
