Press release
Arcade, NY -WCBC North, LLC, managed by the Wyoming County Business Center, has announced that the removal of debris and demolition of the structures at the former Emkay Trading Site at 58 Church Street in the Village of Arcade, has been successfully completed.
The project resulted in the removal and proper disposal or recycling of more than 4,400 tons of debris; 60 drums and containers of waste liquids; and over 200 tons of metal recyclables. The objective of this project was to eliminate the physical hazards and the potential for human exposure to contaminants contained within the buildings and debris.
“We are very pleased with the safe completion of this important phase of the project,” said James Pierce, President of the Wyoming County Business Center. “This property has been a community concern for over 20 years, now that the cleanup has been completed, we can move to the next stage of future site development.”
The site work commenced in May of 2024 and was completed on budget in September 2024 by Metro Contracting & Environmental, Inc. WCBC North has authorized their environmental consultant on the project, LaBella Associates, DPC, to submit a final report summarizing and documenting the project to United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Following review by USEPA, this report will be available for public review at the Village of Arcade office.
In 2022, the not-for-profit organization, WCBC North, was awarded $500,000 in funding through a USEPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant to complete the controlled demolition of the former Emkay Trading dairy processing plant at 58 Church Street in the Village of Arcade, NY. Vacant and abandoned since 2002, the USEPA-funded work completed in September 2024 is a critical step toward the ultimate goal of redeveloping the site for a mixture of senior housing and commercial uses.
