Press release
Town of Java Board members support the striking officers statewide. The Halt act has made New York Prisons unsafe for staff and inmates. According to the Department of Corrections, assaults towards staff have increased 85% since the implementation of the HALT act.
This lack of safety and security has produced a staffing crisis statewide and resulted in inhumane standards of work. Mandated shifts of more than 16 hours have repercussions for the worker. With the Attica and Wyoming Correctional facilities in our county, we are blessed to have many active and retired officers and staff living in the Town of Java, and this board wants to express our support for their need to stand up for safety and quality of life for everyone inside the walls.
