Calling it a “wonderful recognition for my husband,” Renée Thompson appreciatively received the kind words and a declaration from Genesee County Sheriff Joseph Graff on Monday afternoon as part of a badge retirement ceremony at the sheriff’s office memorial garden on Park Road.

Renée Thompson, widow of Correction Officer Raymond F. Thompson, displays the declaration she received honoring her late husband for his service, with Jack Frank.
Thompson’s late husband, Correction Officer Raymond F. Thompson, Badge #206, was one of four sheriff’s officers honored at the observance that memorializes those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Officer Thompson’s “end of watch” was May 30, 2002.

Also honored were:
— Constable William H. Johnson, end of watch March 15, 1895.
— Deputy Sheriff Frank G. Bordonaro, Badge #29, end of watch July 8, 2014.
— Sgt. Thomas A. Sanfratello, Badge #9, whose end of watch came a year ago to the day – March 10, 2024.

About 75 people – including current and former sheriff’s office employees, Genesee County employees and members of the Batavia City Police Department — gathered in front of the memorial garden as Sheriff Graff praised the fallen quartet for their service.

Sgt. Richard Schildwaster presents proclamation honoring the late Sgt. Thomas A. Sanfratello to his son, Ian, who works as a corrections officer at the Genesee County Jail.
“The badge that we wear is more than just a piece of metal,” Graff stated. “It represents commitment, sacrifice, courage, honor, unwavering dedication to protecting and servicing our community.
“… Through countless challenges and moments of triumph, they have worn the badge with honor … their impact was far beyond the uniform. They have touched lives, provided comfort in difficult times and made our community a better safer place.”
Retired deputy, Brian Thompson, closed with a heartfelt and powerful prayer.
