Colton Humel and his dog Mack, a one year old German Shepard, had just returned to the shop at Creekside Rentals on Indian Falls road just after 1:15 Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
“I walked him out to go to the bathroom, and I have these, (wet cloth gloves) and in holding his leash it was slippery,” says Humel.<\/p>\n
Mack ran off during his bathroom break.<\/p>\n
“He was just faster, I chased him around here then he got back into the woods and then to the creek.”<\/p>\n
By the time Humel caught up with Mack he was out on the ice covered waters of the Tonawanda Creek.<\/p>\n
“He just kept going, and then all of a sudden he fell in.”<\/p>\n
Humel then called 9-1-1 for help.<\/p>\n

Within minutes the East Pembroke Fire Department’s water rescue team responded.<\/p>\n
“When we arrived on scene, the dog was in the middle of the creek and got caught standing on a rock out there,” says Don Newton, East Pembroke Fire Chief.<\/p>\n
Newton says Mack was in about a foot and a half of water. The water was up to the mid side of his back.<\/p>\n
“We got here with out utility truck and UTV and ice water rescue stuff and went out. A couple of us put on our water suits and went in to get the dog”<\/p>\n
Newton says they had to go across the ice, get in the water then come back across.<\/p>\n
“The dog was definitely cold, not sure if he was going to bite at all, but I think he was more happy when I grabbed him and then I was able to set him up on top of the ice so we could walk him off to the creek bank.”<\/p>\n

“A happy ending,”says Newton.<\/p>\n
The dog was transported to a local vet by private vehicle after being rescued.<\/p>\n
