The City of Batavia Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association\u00ae (NFPA\u00ae)\u2014the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years\u2014to promote this year\u2019s Fire Prevention Week campaign, \u201cLearn the Sounds of Fire Safety.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s campaign, October 3-9th<\/strong>, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The City of Batavia Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme. \u201cIt\u2019s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noise\u2014a beeping sound or a chirping sound\u2014you must take action!\u201d said Dan Herberger, Fire Chief. \u201cMake sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer\u2019s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The City Batavia Fire Department wants to share safety tips to help you \u201cLearn the Sounds of Fire Safety\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00b7 A continuous set of three loud beeps\u2014beep, beep, beep\u2014means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00b7 A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00b7 All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00b7 Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00b7 Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The City of Batavia Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year\u2019s Fire Prevention Week campaign, \u201cLearn the Sounds of Fire Safety\u201d, including several presentations at area schools, residences and the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Along with our public events, The City of Batavia Fire Department has a FREE smoke alarm installation program,\u201d said Fire Chief Herberger. \u201cIf you do not have a smoke detector or if you are unsure the batteries are working properly, members of the City of Batavia Fire Department will come to your home and ensure that you have a working smoke detector, absolutely free of charge.
