New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball today alerted consumers to the presence of elevated lead levels in Ground Ginger and Ground Cinnamon, manufactured by Badia Spices Inc.,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>located at\u00a0PO Box 226497, Doral, FL 33222.\u00a0Exposure to lead\u00a0may cause health problems to consumers, particularly infants, small children, pregnant women, and those with underlying kidney disorders.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0If a child or a pregnant woman is exposed to lead for a prolonged period of time, permanent damage to the central nervous system, learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems can occur.\u00a0No illnesses have been reported to date.\u00a0Consumers concerned about an injury or illness associated with this product should immediately contact a healthcare provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Badia Ground Cinnamon, sold in 2-ounce clear plastic bottles with black plastic caps with\u00a0UPC Code #033844000158<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Lot #\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0305481<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0309528<\/strong>, are subject to this alert. A photo of the product is included in this consumer alert. The product was sold at multiple retailers within New York State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contamination was discovered after analysis by New York State Food Laboratory personnel revealed the product tested above the 1-part per million action level for lead in spices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
