Zipfel, 73, said he\u2019s the oldest jumper \u201cin the dropzone.\u201d Photos and video by Mike Pettinella\/For Video News Service.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BY MIKE PETTINELLA<br>For Video News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To \u201cair\u201d is human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While talking to several skillful skydivers on Friday afternoon at the Pine Hill Airport in Albion, it was clear they firmly believe that jumping out of airplanes is a thrill that everyone needs to experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The occasion was the second day of the WNYSkydiving \u201cSkyfall Boogie 2025\u201d \u2013 an event that brings together dozens of skydivers \u2013 mostly solo but some tandems, too &#8212; to the organization\u2019s headquarters at Pine Hill Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The business (and the airport) is owned and operated by Tim Allen of Alden, a 25-year skydiving veteran<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled the first time he summoned the nerve to take the plunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/videonewsservice.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/skydive.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Video clip from a Friday afternoon jump<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn&#8217;t realize that spring break was the most important thing I did in college,\u201d he said, adding that his first jump came on spring break in Cancun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen rattled off the date \u2013 March 7, 2001 \u2013 noting that that the jump enabled him to check skydiving off the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were seven or eight of us down there and all of us said we were going to go,\u201d he said. \u201cAs I found out when eight people say they&#8217;re going to go only one actually shows up. I was the one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he rented a Volkswagen Golf from the hotel and drove down the Mexican highway \u2013 \u201cwhen you drive down the Mexican highway, you have to go really fast or you get run over,\u201d he quipped. \u201cSo, I&#8217;m already nervous as could be. And there I am. I got to the place. I was still ridiculously nervous. And I remember doing all the training and that kind of stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe (others who had registered) had to walk to the airplane when we got there. I remember being in the airplane. I remember getting ready to jump out of the airplane. But I don&#8217;t remember jumping out of it. Because it was that my head just went away. He was 86 when he died in 2017. His family bought the property in 1825 through the Holland Land Purchase. So technically, I am the second owner of this property (in 200 years),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airport is on about 100 acres and has one runway. Allen owns four planes, providing plenty of space for the groups of 12 or 18 that go up at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said his business offers two major types of jumping \u2013 tandem and experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe tandem skydives are for the public that wants to come out and maybe make one jump,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd even if they want to make more than one jump, they can keep doing that. McEvoy has been skydiving for 47 years, compiling more than 20,000 jumps, including at the Kentucky Derby and onto the infield of Yankee Stadium.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe experienced jumpers that we have, they have to get a license. You need at least 25 jumps through our licensing program. Once you become licensed, you can go and do all the different things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen said this weekend\u2019s \u201cboogie\u201d primarily caters to the experienced jumpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, we&#8217;ve intentionally made it pretty light with the tandem.
